Outdoor Newborn Photography in Kent – A Summer Session Among Wildflowers
What’s not to love? Ox-eye daisies and newborns, buttercups and baby toes, golden hour settling over a fairytale scene as you soak in those early days with your baby—whether they’re brand new or already growing fast. This hidden gem in Canterbury, Kent, is peaceful and almost impossibly magical, like a scene from a storybook. As a Kent Newborn and Family Photographer, it’s one of my favourite locations through spring, summer, and autumn. With its ever-changing wildflowers, long swishy grasses, cows grazing in the distance, and the most dreamy evening light, it’s a perfect backdrop for capturing natural but also elevated family heirloom photographs.
I mean imagine seeing this is 20 years and thinking how damn cool your mum and dad (were)are?
It’s all about YOU and who you want to see in years to come
This beautiful couple met in Bali while exploring life out there. They connected deeply, and their sweet boy was born shortly after they settled back in Kent, UK. Baby Juno was just two weeks old when they brought him out to enjoy an evening of gentle breezes and buttercups between his toes. True baby sensory—nature. He was pretty content on arrival but needed lots of cluster feeds throughout the session. And honestly? That’s just a little dose of real life. Sometimes sessions are feeding-heavy—and that’s okay. This is what life is like in this season, so we roll with it.
This particular area is home to a tiny pub, endless farmland, and of course, the field. When I first saw it, I just stood and stared—immediately envisioning motherhood in the long grass, families making flower crowns, warm sunlight slipping below the horizon as the sky turned pink and lilac. In the distance: church steeples from the many chapels dotting rural Canterbury. The smell of wildflowers, the sound of crickets, flocks of birds, and the herd of cows nearby... If it had a babbling brook, it would be straight out of a fairytale. (I’m still on the lookout for one, just in case.)
Everyone dressed perfectly—for the weather, for the setting, and for the tone of the evening. While it’s always tempting to reach for a flowing dress (which I adore), I’m also an absolute die-hard fan of a co-ord. A ready-made outfit that just works. This mama had not one, but three beautiful little sets that took her from soft florals to a muted butter yellow skirt, and later to shorts with tall boots—a current, cool bloomer-short moment. Nothing looks better than putting your own spin on style.
If you’ve read my styling guide (which is intentionally loose), you’ll know how much I love it when clients make it their own. Dad paired chunky cord trousers with a simple, stylish sweater, then later changed into a soft check shirt when Mum switched up her set. Just classic, elegant, and effortlessly cool in his Birkenstocks—a subtly elevated daily look that totally worked.
A newborn may seem like the focus of the session but I see you two, too. The couple. Navigating a whole new life together now.
As your Kent Family & Newborn Photographer, I’m always happy to offer guidance—whether it’s helping you decide what to bring, giving on-the-day advice, or even trawling the internet to help find pieces that feel just right. Whatever feels most like you, I’m here for it.
Life with a new baby can feel like a blur. It’s beautiful, but also raw, nights blending into days, feeds and changes on repeat. These sessions are a pause from the mundane (although we know it still happens anyway.) A way to step outside, breathe, and see each other again. I’ll guide you into moments that feel - hand gently on the nape of her neck, thumb brushing her jaw, a quiet laugh when the baby unlatches for the 18th time and you have to break a brief moment of tender eye contact. As a Kent newborn photographer, I’m here to help you romanticise this season and to hold space for connection. My storytelling is drenched in romantic normality.
So again - imagine seeing this in 20 years... You’re older, wiser, softer, you wonder what you ever worried about and why it felt so hard to get out for these photos. Your son walks in the door and he’s taller than you, he walks to the fridge (IYKYK) and sees this up and the wall and its been there so long no one looks at it much anymore but if you’ve moved out recently (wah!) suddenly those homely things feel SO safe and good. He suddenly sees himself, nurtured into adulthood by this same glowing mama in the photo. He feels the love he’s had all his lifetime and that this is where it all started. Pure magic.
Wildflower season is way too short but here are 5 Gentle Tips to Capturing a Wildflower Family, Newborn or Maternity Photography Session;
choose your month! Daffodils in March, blue-bells in May. We get ox-eye daisies late may into June, poppies mid-June, wheat, barley and other wildflower like sheeps sorrel and purple knapweed in late June and July. By August a lot of it is browning and we get the prettiest golden grasses.
dress for the weather or time of day! No one needs to be freezing in March to get photos in Daffodil season. We can style you beautifully even with a newborn or for pregnancy to make which season you choose super comfy and effective.
Visualise the background of images that will feel right for you as a family. Is that fields of golden wheat? Or a rose garden in a park? Book your session based on what you see for yourselves in the walls of your home - not forgetting family, newborn and maternity photography is also an extension of your decor. Don’t do poppies if you don’t want a big red framed print on the walls.
Be prepared for wildlife. Bug repellent for the warmer months is a must but yes this means bugs. Many of them. If you can get curious this makes for excellent photos but if nature is a huge no for you maybe the beach will be a better shout.
Use pinterest to style yourselves around the tone of the location. Bright yellow rapeseed fields are divine in May but what does this yellow scene paint in your mind when you visualise dressing? Deep browns and rusts would compliment this wildflower.
If this feels like the kind of memory you want to hold onto, I’d love to hear from you. Whether your baby is days old or already finding their feet, there’s space for your story here. We’ll meet where the light is good and the grass is long and just see what unfolds. You don’t need to plan it all. You just need to come as you are. Get in touch here if you feel ready—or even if you’re just curious.
